Chief Grand Master Jay K. Shin was born March 1st, 1944 at Hadong, Korea. When he was 10 years old, he decided to move to Seoul, Korea to continue on with his education.
This was the beginning of his career in Taekwondo.
He studied computer science and earned his Master of Science degree from Yeon-Sei University (Korea's #1 private university) in Seoul,Korea.
In 1977, Chief Grand Master Shin traveled to Hong Kong as computer programmer. His martial arts education continued and he became the Chief Master of over 2000 members at the British Field Forces in Hong Kong.
In 1980, he visited the United States to perform a Taekwondo demonstration at Madison Square Garden in New York.
In 1982, Chief Grand Master Shin was invited by Mr. Sharad Chandra Shaha, the president of the Nepal Olympic Committee in Kathmandu Nepal, to introduce Taekwondo to his country. He became the Chief Taekwondo Master of the Nepal's National Sports Council (Olympic Committee), Royal Nepalese Army and Royal Nepalese Police Training Center.
In 1985, Chief Grand Master Shin was requested by Mr. G. Rusul, secretary general of the Bhutan Olympic Committee in Thimphu, to establish Bhutan Taekwondo Federation.
In 1987, Chief Grand Master Shin joined as a co-member of the Korean '87-'88 Winter Mt. Everest Expedition Team. His team conquered the top of the world that year.
Chief Grand Master Shin was the first to introduce Taekwondo to the Kingdom of Nepal and Bhutan. His Taekwondo teams had a shorter history of Taekwondo instruction than any other country that participated in the 24th Olympiad, 10th Asian Games, and the World Taekwondo Championships. Despite that fact, his teams produced many World, Asiad, and Olympic Champions. His team brought the first medals ever for Nepal.
In 1988, Chief Grand Master Shin came to Portland, Oregon where he established the World Taekwondo Association. Chief Grand Master J.K. Shin is now known as one of the foremost authorities in the field of Taekwondo and is viewed as a pioneer in the International Taekwondo Community.
